Clark: Renewables must work with automotive sector

The renewables sector must work with the automotive sector to help the development of energy storage, according to the business and energy secretary.

Speaking at a fringe event at the Conservative party conference in Birmingham, Greg Clark stated that a close working relationship between the two industrial sectors will help benefit both with improving battery technologies.

“Reaching our international targets means investment in renewable is incredibly important.

“If we’re going to advance the development of renewable technologies then one of the challenges is how we can store that energy generated from intermittent sources.”

He added that was the purpose of creating the new Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to link up different sectors of the economy.

“It so happens the developments we have in the automotive sector with electric vehicles and batteries give us come ability to advance that.

“So joining these things up in terms of research budget and public policy, to bring these things together so Britain can be a place that maximises the benefits of clean energy and balance development of automotive and battery technology to the great advantage of our country.”
