CS Wind to build UK’s first offshore wind tower factory

South Korean company CS Wind is to build the UK’s first offshore wind tower manufacturing facility at Campbeltown in Scotland.

The project was partly enabled by a multi-million investment by Dong Energy, which will receive preferential access to the towers produced at the site.

The facility will be located next to CS Wind’s existing onshore wind tower factory, which it acquired when it bought the company Wind Towers Scotland from SSE and the Highlands and Islands Enterprise in April. It will be able to produce at least 50 towers each year.

Dong Energy’s UK chairman Brent Cheshire said: “The UK is the world leader in offshore wind and a growing market for Dong Energy. Our investment means that we and other offshore wind developers will be able to source towers in the UK, which is fantastic news not just for us but the whole UK offshore industry.”

“We have seen £52bn of investment in renewable energy in the UK since 2010, and we are supporting more offshore wind than any other country in the world,” said business and energy minister Baroness Neville-Rolfe.

“This inward investment drives forward positive local supply chain partnerships like this between Dong Energy and CS Wind, delivering economic growth and creating jobs across Scotland and the UK.”
