Surfers’ group highlights scale of ‘dry’ sewage spills
Surfers Against Sewage has accused water companies of discharging sewage into waterways 146 times between October 2021 and September 2022 on days where there had not been heavy rainfall on the previous two days. In addition to water companies, the campaign group said blame for these “dry spills” partly lays with regulators for failing to act and the government for slashing regulatory budgets.
