Ofwat seeks net zero innovations
Another £40 million is up for grabs for collaborative ideas that could solve some of the common problems that the water sector is facing. Ofwat highlighted the net zero transition as an area that could benefit from the innovation funding. It called for "even bolder initiatives" as the sector stares down problems of net zero, pollution leakage and climate change.

Future-proofed drainage tops innovation winners

Ofwat has launched its fourth year of innovation funding, with a twist. This is the first time entrants from outside the sector are encouraged to enter without needing to partner with a water company on the application. The regulator said the water sector could learn from energy, construction, cities and transport, agriculture, and data industries.

Affinity sets out approaches for three water neutrality trials
Affinity has set out plans for its three water neutrality trials across Bedfordshire, which will include utlitising water efficiency devices and rainwater harvesting, as well as testing behavioural change techniques on communities. The company said initial results from the project, funded through the Ofwat Innovation Fund, had offset the equivalent of 300 new connections.

Ofwat considers extending innovation competition
Ofwat has proposed changing the rules for entries to its innovation to open it up to more sectors by removing the need to partner with a water company and allowing background IP to be licensed. The competition was originally intended to run to 2025 but the regulator said this could be extended.

Ofwat awards £5.2m to innovation winners
Ofwat has named 13 projects that will be awarded a share of £5.2 million from its innovation fund for the second year of its Water Breakthrough Challenge. The projects will receive between £155,000 and £760,000 each to develop collaborative cross-sector innovations that improve water quality, reduce pollution and raise customer service levels as part of the competition's Catalyst Stream.
