Ofwat has launched an investigation into Welsh Water's reporting of leakage rates and per capita consumption (PCC). The company alerted the regulator to issues it identified with its own performance calculations. This is the second company this week to face investigation after Ofwat raised concerns over South West's leakage and PCC calculations.

A water demand reduction target of 20% per capita below 2018 levels has been formally set as part of environmental targets confirmed by government and laid in the House of Lords. There are also fresh targets around nitrogen, phosphorous and sediment pollution. Defra will publish its approach to how these targets as well as ambitions for biodiversity, air and land will be achieved including interim targets for the coming years.

Affinity Water has seen daily water demand in its supply areas jump by more than a quarter when compared to usual levels as a result of this week’s record-breaking heatwave. Speaking to Utility Week on the back of the company's recently released financial results for 2021/22, Affinity’s interim chief executive Stuart Ledger said his teams had been working hard to replenish supplies overnight to meet the “ferocious” demand, despite making advance preparations for the extreme weather.

Not including smart water meters in PR24 business plans would represent a “missed opportunity” to reduce consumption and leakage, according to Arqiva. Peter Baker, director of smart utilities networks at the telecommunications company, said smart meters have already been shown to be effective at identifying leaks and encouraging consumers to lower their water usage, adding: "It doesn’t all have to be policy and mandates – the cost and consumption benefits are clear to be seen.”

Affinity Water has begun a television, radio and social media campaign to inform its customers of the work it does to find and fix leaks ahead of ramping up its water efficiency messaging. The company said its research had shown leakage rates were putting customers off from saving water.
