Without regional water transfers, investment in new reservoirs, and demand reduction the UK will face a water supply crisis in the next 25 years. Stephen Cousins reports.
Portsmouth Water has agreed a long-term deal to transfer 15 million litres of water a day to help supply Southern Water customers in Southampton, Hampshire. The volume supplied as part of the agreement will be transferred from Portsmouth Water’s River Itchen Treatment Works and is enough to supply 100,000 customer each day.
South West Water supported the Isles of Scilly operations during the summer months when water levels fell to extreme lows as the company prepares to take over the water supply of the area.
United Utilities has said it expects to spend an additional £80 million in the current financial year to safeguard water supplies during the summer drought.
