Technical advisors appointed in tidal lagoon review

A team of technical experts have been appointed to assess the technical aspects of tidal lagoon energy in the UK as part of an independent review.

Renewable energy advisory group IT Power Consulting will lead the team of technical advisors which include staff from Energised Environments and Xero Energy. The experts will assess and validate the technical aspects of the evidence and identify gaps for a wider tidal lagoon programme in the UK.

The independent review, announced by the government in February 2016 is being led by Charles Hendry, the UK’s former Minister of State for Energy, and aims to assess the feasibility, practicality and cost-effectiveness of tidal lagoon energy as part of the UK’s energy mix.

Though the work will be independent of the government, the contract has been awarded to ITP under the Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Technical Specialist Framework.

ITP project director and managing director David Nickols said: “Our team is very proud to have been selected to support the review in assessing the feasibility and practicality of tidal lagoon energy in the UK.

“Our technical advisory team has extensive experience in tidal range and other offshore renewable energy technologies and is well qualified to support the Hendry Review’s assessment of a potential UK programme of tidal lagoons.”

In May this year, Hendry issued a call for evidence from industry stakeholders and interested parties on the cost, benefits and opportunities of tidal lagoons.

A decision on the review is expected in Autumn, until which time the world’s first tidal lagoon at Swansea Bay will be delayed. The project has struggled to agree a subsidy price with government and earlier this year Prime Minister David Cameron expressed concerns over its cost.
