More than 2.5m SMETS2 smart meters have been installed

More than 2.5 million second-generation SMETS2 smart meters have been installed, the Smart Data Communications Company (DCC) has confirmed.

In total 2,501,309 second generation meters have now been fitted.

Responding to the latest figure, Robert Cheesewright, director of corporate affairs at smart meter campaign group Smart Energy GB, said: “This is an important and very welcome milestone in the rollout of smart meters.

“We are now seeing a rapid increase in the number of installations of second generation meters and this is great news for consumers, the economy and our environment.

“With each installation we lay the foundation of a smarter energy grid with a better experience for consumers while eliminating energy waste across the nation.”

Last month the government announced that the smart meter rollout, which was initially scheduled to end next year, would be extended to 2024.

In addition to the milestone, Smart DCC has also published a list of companies which have been fully onboarded onto its network and have given their consent. Affiliated white label brands have not been included.

DCC added that companies that are not listed may be in the process of onboarding.

Siobhan Stanger, chief regulatory officer at Smart DCC, said: “Earlier this month we published a list of our customers, including a list of those actively installing SMETS2.

“This is consistent with our licence obligation to help facilitate competition within the market.”
