37 convictions for water offences in Scotland over three years

Between 2008/09 and 2010/11, 33 fines totalling £135,550 were dished out and four admonishments.

Just over half (19) of the cases related to breaches by a licensed operator, while the remainder concerned unauthorised sites.

During the same period, there were 50 convictions and fines totalling £199,035 for waste offences. Breaches of pollution prevention and control regulations accounted for seven convictions and £53,500 in fines.

Calum MacDonald, SEPA’s director of operations, said: “We have a good level of compliance with operators across Scotland, and I believe that, in most cases, working with operators to raise their awareness of environmental requirements will achieve the desired outcomes and protect the environment.

“However, as these figures show, SEPA will not shy away from using our formal enforcement tools where necessary.”
