Almost 400,000 customers switched electricity supplier in January

Almost 400,000 electricity customers switched supplier in January this year, an increase of 5 per cent on the same time last year.

Energy UK’s latest electricity switching figures published today (18 February) reveal that a total of 382,665 customers switched.

The figures reveal that more than 100,000 customers switched to small and mid-tier suppliers.

The net gain by small and mid-tier suppliers was 107,409, or 28 per cent of all switches.

Of switches in January, 40 per cent were from larger to small and mid-tier suppliers, 12 per cent were from small and mid-tier to larger suppliers, 21 per cent were between larger suppliers and 27 per cent were between small and mid-tier suppliers.

Last year was a record year for switching according to the trade body, with over 5.8 million customers making a change.

Lawrence Slade, chief executive of Energy UK, said: “It is positive to see that consumers continue to engage in the energy market, with nearly 400,000 customers switching last month.

“While it is too soon to tell the impact the price cap and the recent increase from Ofgem reflecting increasing costs, there are still savings to be made.

“My advice to customers would be to get in touch with your supplier to see if you could be on a better deal.

“And for those who decide to switch, the Energy Switch Guarantee means customers can feel confident that the switch will be simple, speedy and safe.

“Crucially, the best way for consumers to keep their energy bills down in the long run is by making sure their homes are energy efficient – for example checking that they are well insulated.”
