43 per cent of people worry about paying next fuel bill

The survey found that one in three people nationwide don’t know that energy firms are offering free or discounted insulation, rising to almost half of people in London. Also, less than half of people knew that energy companies have to take into account their ability to pay into consideration when making debt repayment arrangements.

The charity is highlighting the problem this week with a cross-industry educational push. Its Big Energy Week programme, agreed between energy suppliers and consumer groups at the government’s Energy Summit last autumn, starts today. The aim, said energy secretary Chris Huhne, is “to get the advice and information out to as many consumers across the country as possible”.

Switching sites, consumer groups and energy companies will all take part in the programme.
