Sir David Attenborough will appear in front of the BEIS (business, energy and industrial strategy) committee next week to face questions on the government’s net zero target.
The veteran natural history broadcaster will be quizzed on Tuesday (9 July) by the committee on a range of issues relating to climate change and the net-zero emissions target, which was signed into law by the government last week.
The select committee hearing follows the surprise appearance by the 93-year old on the main Pyramid stage at last weekend’s Glastonbury festival.
A BEIS committee hearing, previously scheduled for next Wednesday with energy minister of state Chris Skidmore has been pushed back to a later date.
The hearings are part of the committee’s ongoing work on the government’s clean growth strategy and complement its current inquiries on financing energy infrastructure and on energy efficiency. The committee has also carried out inquiries on carbon capture usage and storage and on electric vehicles.
The evidence session is likely to cover Sir David’s views on public engagement and public perceptions of climate change, the ecological impact of global warming, and the benefits and costs of the transition to a low-carbon economy.
The committee has also recently heard evidence from the Extinction Rebellion campaign and has joined in an initiative to convene a Citizens’ Assembly in the autumn to map out a road map to achieving the net zero target by 2050.
