Renewable energy provider, Good Energy will install the “first bespoke” battery service solution at the Eden Project.
Good Energy said the battery, due to be installed in summer 2018, will help the Eden Project to match its energy demand with supply and will deliver cost savings.
The move marks a “new strategic direction” for the company, and takes it “one step closer to its purpose of powering a cleaner, greener future,” it said in a statement.
The battery at the Eden Project in Cornwall will be a combination of five x 50kW ‘fridge-sized’ battery units and a control centre. Eden plans to create a new exhibit to show its visitors how the battery works and the environmental and economic benefits it will provide.
Dr Randall Bowen, director of business services at Good Energy, said: “We’re delighted to help the Eden Project become the first commercial site of its kind, to harness renewables through battery storage. Our unique proposition makes battery storage commercially viable for the first time at this scale, and is a major breakthrough in reducing reliance on the National Grid and reaching our shared goal of a 100 per cent renewable UK.”
Peter Wroe, finance director at the Eden Project, said the installation was part of the attraction’s “ongoing efforts to demonstrate innovative and sustainable solutions to energy issues.”
Eden is already powered by local renewable energy via the Selectricity scheme, in which Good Energy is a partner. Selectricity enables businesses to choose the renewable generators who provide their energy.
