The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has had its ministerial team fully confirmed following the government reshuffle.
Yesterday (15 August) Lord Ian Duncan revealed that he had been appointed as minister for climate change after the scope of his remit was confirmed, following his initial appointment last month.
Duncan’s responsibilities also include serving as the Lords lead on all BEIS issues, as well as being responsible for smart meters and smart systems.
He replaces Lord Henley who had been in the role for almost two years prior to Duncan’s appointment on 26 July.
The full team is as follows:
- Secretary of state – Andrea Leadsom
- Minister for energy and clean growth – Kwasi Kwarteng
- Minister of state – Jo Johnson
- Parliamentary under-secretary of state – Kelly Tolhurst
- Parliamentary under-secretary of state – Nadhim Zahawi
- Minister for climate change- Ian Duncan
Leadsom resigned from her role as leader of the House of Commons in May after two years. She previously served as environment secretary and during the Coalition years she held the position of minister of state for energy at what was then the Department of Energy and Climate Change. She replaces Tunbridge Wells MP Greg Clark who had previously held the position for three years.
Kwarteng previously served as parliamentary under secretary of state in the Brexit department. He replaces Claire Perry who had stepped down from the role earlier this year.
Perry has since been named as the president of the COP26 climate summit, due to take place in Glasgow next year.
Meanwhile former environment secretary Michael Gove was appointed as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. His role was taken by Theresa Villiers. While the line-up of the Defra team has been revealed, a spokesperson told Utility Week that individual portfolios had not been confirmed yet.
