Bidders shortlisted for UK carbon capture and storage competition

The successful projects have been invited to negotiate with the
government, before a decision on which projects to support further is
taken next year.

The four bids shortlisted are: Captain Clean Energy Project in
Grangemouth, Scotland; a capture project led by Shell and SSE in
Peterhead, Scotland; Teesside Low Carbon Project and the White Rose
Project at a Drax site in North Yorkshire.

All but Captain Clean Energy Project also applied for European
Commission funding from NER allowances. European funds are conditional
on the UK government putting forward matched funding.

The UK is backing Teesside and the White Rose Project for European funding, with Peterhead on the reserve list.

The Commission is to announce awards from its first round of funding
at the end of the year. The maximum support available for CCS projects
is around £250 million per project.
