Big six firms commit to protect vulnerable customers

The two suppliers achieved Energy UK’s ‘gold award’, which honours the voluntary commitment of the UK’s largest suppliers to abide by a ‘Safety Net’ set of principles. British Gas, EDF, Eon and Npower were all given the ‘silver award’.

Suppliers are rigorously tested against 13 key objectives and pledge to never knowingly disconnect a vulnerable customer at any time of year where the customer is unable to safeguard their personal welfare or the welfare of other members of the household.

Energy UK chief executive Lawrence Slade said: “The Safety Net is an important commitment by Energy UK members to never knowingly disconnect a vulnerable customer.

“Publishing the results of the Safety Net audit underlines the priority that energy suppliers place on protecting their most vulnerable customers. The results demonstrate the good practice that is found in the industry but suppliers know there is no place for complacency.”

The annual audit showed good application and adherence to the Safety Net principles by all six members and there were no instances of non-compliance.
