British Gas smart meter study shows 6 per cent fall in bills

The UK’s largest energy supplier said that the “most detailed study ever undertaken” shows that customers are able to save money on their energy bills through more efficient behavior as a result of the smart meter energy monitor installed in their home.

The study was conducted by an independent research company over 10 weeks and including 14 homes across Britain.

The results show that those involved used 6 per cent less gas and 7 per cent less electricity than similar homes without smart meters, “simply by being more aware of their energy use”, British Gas said.

“If this energy-efficient behavior continued for a year, they will save an average of £66 off their annual energy bill,” the supplier added.

British Gas managing director of smart metering Jorge Pikunic said: “Our families were clearly surprised about how small changes to everyday habits can make a big difference to how much energy you use.

“But to know what changes to make, people need real time information and smart meters provide just that.”
