Carlton Power to bid over 3GW of new CCGT into capacity auction

Carlton Power has signed an agreement with a consortium including GE and Spanish companies Tecnicas, Reunidas and Ferrovial Agroman for the engineering contract to construct the 1.8 GW Trafford Power project.

In addition, the company bought GE’s stake in the 1.5 GW Thorpe Marsh CCGT, Carlton Power said.

Both projects, representing a total investment of £2 billion, have already received government consent although the final decision on whether construction moves forward will depend on the outcome of the UK’s first capacity auction to be finalised at the end of the year for 2018/19 delivery.

“We are in a strong position to play our part in the country’s efforts to build new capacity over the next 4 to 5 years by having two consented combined cycle power plant projects,” said Carlton Power managing director Keith Clarke.

He added that the company hopes to begin construction at Trafford before May of next year and at Thorpe Marsh soon after, pending the outcome of the auction.
