Centrica boss in Brexit warning: reports

Centrica chief executive Iain Conn told the newspaper Europe was “fundamental” in setting the UK’s energy prices: “The UK is importing more than 50 per cent of its gas today. And that is only going to rise. Where does it come from? Mainly from Norway, continental Europe and liquefied natural gas. The marginal price of our imports is set by the European price.”

Conn argued it is in Britain’s interests to make the European energy system as efficient as possible, adding:  “I cannot imagine influencing the competitiveness of the European energy system nearly as well from the outside banging on the door saying listen to us.”

In November energy secretary Amber Rudd said leaving the EU would plunge Britain’s energy market “into an area of uncertainty”
