Luff has been appointed as the chief financing officer at the Anglo-Dutch information company Reed Elsevier, and will take up his new position after leaving Centrica, which will be no later than 31 December 2014.
A search for a new chief finance director is underway at Centrica but in the meantime Luff will continue as the chief finance director, which he has held since 2007, and as a board member, and he will assist “with an orderly transition to his successor”.
Sam Laidlaw, chief executive at Centrica, said “Nick has made a significant and lasting contribution to Centrica’s success over the last 7 years.
“Personally, I will miss Nick’s valuable input to my team and I would like to thank him for his ongoing support over the coming months.
“I know that I speak on behalf of everyone at Centrica in wishing him well in this next chapter of his career.”
Erik Engstrom, Reed Elsevier chief executive, said: “I am pleased to have Nick join the team.
“His many years of experience as finance director of a FTSE 30 company, combined with his involvement in dual UK/US and Netherlands-based listings, make him a great fit for Reed Elsevier.”
