‘Clear’ objectives needed to tackle fuel poverty

National Energy Action (NEA) has launched a winter-long campaign which is calling on the government to set clear objectives to tackle the “cold home crisis”.

More than 300 organisations are supporting the campaign and an amendment to the Energy Bill which has been tabled, which would establish minimum energy efficiency targets low income households.

Labour MP Chris Williamson has tabled the amendment, which is set to be debated on 4 December in the House of Commons.

He said: “Establishing robust minimum standards in primary legislation will also ensure this and future governments can be held to account for the actions they must take to end the current cold home crisis.”

Jenny Saunders, chief executive of the NEA, added: “Government’s number one priority must be to preserve and expand adequate support for energy efficiency.

“This is the most cost effective way of reducing fuel poverty which has the added benefit of reducing carbon emissions.”
