Cockenzie to close in March 2013

From next month, the station’s output will be halved to 550MW to manage the remainder of the 20,000 hours it was allowed to operate after opting out of the Large Combustion Plant Directive in 2008.

The company said it would try to find other jobs for the plant’s 100 staff, or carry out voluntary redundancies where possible.

Cockenzie was commissioned in 1967. Scottish Power CEO Neil Clitheroe said the “skills, experience and dedication” of the Cockenzie team had “enabled the station to operate for more than 20 years beyond its design life.”
