Customers urged to cash in energy supplier credit

The website uSwitch.com has called on customers to claim back a total of £1.3 billion of credit, which is sitting in energy suppliers’ bank accounts.

New research published today (26 April) by the switching website reveals nearly half (42 per cent) of all UK households are in credit with their suppliers, and could reclaim an average of £117.

And almost one in 10 (7 per cent) of UK households could reclaim more than £200.

But despite the large number of people in credit, the website has also claimed 14 per cent are in debt to their supplier following the recent winter.

The website’s energy expert, Claire Osborne, said the research shows the importance of regular meter readings to prevent bills from becoming inaccurate.

“Consumers who are building up credit to soften the blow of price hikes should instead consider reclaiming this money and switching to a cheaper deal,” said Osborne.

“With an average credit refund of £117 and savings of over £350 by switching supplier, it could be a very effective way to control spiralling energy bills.

“With a range of suppliers raising prices over the last few months, any consumers who find themselves in debt should get in touch with their supplier right away to prevent the situation from getting any worse,” she added.
