Davey opens England’s largest onshore windfarm

SSE’s £98 million project consists of 34 turbines and will generate up to 68 MW of electricity.

Ed Davey said: “Onshore wind is the cheapest form of low-carbon power we have. It powers millions of homes and provides thousands of green jobs for people across the UK.”

SSE managing director generation Paul Smith said the opening of the windfarm “reflects SSE’s determination to provide the energy people need in a reliable and sustainable way”.

During the 25-year lifespan of the windfarm, SSE will provide £8.5 million funding to support local community projects.

The first turbines began exporting electricity to the grid in September 2013 and the windfarm was completed in summer 2014.
