Disruptor category launched for Utility Week Awards 2019

The industry’s flagship event – the Utility Weeks Awards – returns for 2019, with a brand new and very topical category.

The 2019 event will see the introduction of a dedicated category for the Disruptor of the year.

The new award recognises the changing face of the utilities sector, with businesses of new shapes and sizes breaking into the market and turning traditional ways of operating on their head. While these new entrants to the market are challenging the very notion of what a utility business is, incumbents are rising to the challenge and launching their own innovations.

The Disruptor Award will recognise businesses – new or old – that are breaking the mould, responding to key challenges and opportunities in the sector’s operating environment to create a viable model for the utilities of the future.

We are delighted that Energy Systems Catapult chief executive Philip New has agreed to judge the new category.

He said: “Disruption changes the rules of the game. Bold, brave, risky ideas – inspired by a vision of change, implemented with tenacity and courage. Ideas that demand attention, challenge incumbents, shake conventional wisdom and unleash growth and renewal.”

The new category takes the total to 15 gongs available on the night of December 9, when the sector’s great and good come together at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

The Utility Week Awards are open to utility companies producing, distributing and retailing energy or water. Other companies are welcome to enter jointly with utility partners. The initiative, project or campaign in most cases should be completed during the financial year 2018/19.
