Dong Energy to invest £5.4bn in UK offshore wind by 2019

The report, from economic development and generation consultancy Regeneris Consulting, shows that Dong Energy will have invested £5.4 billion between 2005 and 2019.

The overall investment from the business supplier includes £2.7 billion across the four windfarms already in operation off the North West coastline and a further estimated £2.7 billion into the two currently under construction, including the 660MW Walney Extension which is expected to be completed in 2019. The Walney Extension will eclipse the London Array as the world’s biggest offshore wind farm.

Dong Energy UK country chairman Brent Cheshire said: “This report highlights the far-reaching regional benefits of Dong Energy’s investment in offshore wind projects off the coast of North West England.

“The wind farms we are developing in this region are enabling us to place large-scale contracts with UK suppliers which acts as a catalysis for further investment and upskilling benefits across the supply chain.”

Last month, Dong Energy offered its customers renewable electricity for the same price as traditional sources in a bid to encourage companies to switch to cleaner power.
