Dong launches DSR service for business customers

The Danish firm, which is heavily involved in offshore wind, has invited its larger business customers to sign up to the scheme, which will involve adjusting their energy consumption when wind strength varies from forecast.

Dong said its ‘Renewable Balancing Reserve’ has several advantages over other DSR schemes. It requires no commitment as customers are able to choose whether or not to reduce their demand each time a request is sent, without any financial penalties for failing to respond. It also runs throughout the year and not just during the winter.

Managing director of Dong Energy Sales UK, Jeff Whittingham, said: “Dong Energy is investing in the development of new commercial solutions to balance an intermittent generation portfolio, whilst helping businesses to use their flexibility to create value.

“ Renewable Balancing Reserve is different, providing businesses with an alternative way to reduce costs and create new revenue, without the risk of penalties or restrictive schedules.”

Last week Dong made a final investment decision on Hornsea Project One, which at 1.2GW is set to be the world’s largest offshore wind farm when it becomes operational in 2020.
