In 2020, UK water companies unveiled their ground-breaking plan to deliver net zero water services for customers by 2030 in the world’s first sector-wide commitment of its kind. This plan is forecast save the emission of 10 million tonnes of greenhouse gas by reaching net zero two decades ahead of the UK Government’s target of 2050.
Royal HaskoningDHV is keen to play its play in helping the water sector meet its net zero commitment and other sustainability requirements, through use of its aerobic granular sludge wastewater treatment: Nereda® technology, and associated consultancy, digital and software innovations.
The successful development of Nereda technology has led to us being awarded 88 projects worldwide and our technology has been recognised at the ‘breakthrough technology of the decade’.
We have made great progress since we first introduced Nereda® technology into the UK. We now have 15 plants in operation and two plants under construction across the UK and Ireland. Since process start-up we have continued to work closely with local operations teams to learn lessons and optimise performance at all plants. We have achieved great performance at many sites including Kendal, Inverurie, Morecambe and Blackburn, with little or no chemical usage. Of the 12 plants operational in the UK, 11 plants are achieving the current TP consents without the addition of ferric, and we have minimised the trim dose at one site to maintain the TP consent.
