Pope to visit Brazil slum
Pope Francis I, on his first international trip as pontiff, visits dwellers at Manguinhos slum in Rio de Janeiro (to July 29). He will also meet young prisoners and address Brazilâs political and business leaders. Over 1.5m pilgrims are expected to flock to Rio for the visit where there were massive street protests last month.
Piracy under fire
The third Annual Combatting Piracy: West African Maritime Security conference is in Lagos to assess current threat levels and initiatives (to July 25).
Chile mission
UN special rapporteur Ben Emmerson, an independent human rights expert, visits Chile to see officials and government ministers, organisers of non-governmental organisations and visit detention centres (to July 30).
Getting physical
The Europhysics Conference on High-Energy Physics continues in Stockholm for more than 600 physicists to review the current state of the science (to July 24).
EU hedge fund curbs
European Union hedge fund regulations come into force. The Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive, the EUâs attempt to protect investors, effectively creates a single market with a host of new regulations.
Home loans help
Britainâs government is to make an announcement on the second part of its housing âHelp to Buyâ scheme. Borrowers still need a 5 per cent deposit, while the lender will be able to buy a guarantee from the government covering up to 15 per cent of property value.
Paralympians gather
Around 1,300 athletes from 90 countries compete for medals at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon (to July 28), the first major gathering of world track and field stars since the London Paralympics.

The House of Lords welcomes former BoE governor Sir Mervyn to its benches as Lord King. Labourâs Lord Winston asks a question on measures being taken to alleviate the health risk from air pollution in London. Nuclear mission
Japanese foreign minister Fumio Kishida visits the Middle East in an effort to move forward the stalled peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. In Jordan he is expected to promote Japanâs nuclear power expertise as Amman is considering building its first nuclear power plant (to July 27).
Egyptian landmark
Egypt, where Mohamed Morsiâs ousting by the military has led to protests and deadly street battles between rival sides, marks its national day, the anniversary of the 1952 revolution, a bloodless coup by army officers led by Gamal Abdel Nasser and Anwar Sadat which overthrew King Farouk.
Emirati art
London auction house Sothebyâs hosts the first UK exhibition by artists from the United Arab Emirates (to August 9). The Three Generations exhibition reflects the spirit of the desert landscapes of Al Dhafra.

Blast off to station
Space mission ISS Progress 52 is due to blast off from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, with supplies for the International Space Station. Nasa last week aborted a spacewalk at the station because of a dangerous water leak in an astronautâs helmet.

Kuwaitis go to polls
Kuwait holds its sixth parliamentary election in seven years. The election was ordered by the top court after the countryâs ruling assembly was dissolved on June 20.
Something to crow about
A sculpture by German artist Katharina Fritsch of a 14ft blue cockerel is due to be unveiled on the fourth plinth on Londonâs Trafalgar Square.
Politics in the musical box
The Womad music and dance festival, founded in 1980 by Peter Gabriel and others, takes place in Wiltshire (to July 28).

Games on again
The London Anniversary Games are a three-day event, which will be staged at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford. A number of Olympic and Paralympic medallists will be taking part, including sprinter Usain Bolt, heptathlete Jessica Ennis (pictured), long jumper Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah, who won gold in the 5,000m and the 10,000m.

The Australian Outback Marathon is mainly on red earth tracks at Ayers Rock.

A general election is held in Cambodia with 9.7m people eligible to vote and eight parties contesting.
Election in Cyprus
A parliamentary election is held in Northern Cyprus after the June resignation of National Unity party leader and prime minister Irsen Kucuk following a vote of no-confidence.

The German Grand Prix is at the Hockenheim Circuit.
