Eaton kicks off home energy partnership with Manchester City

Power management company Eaton has joined forces with Manchester City Football Club to produce a limited-edition version of its xStorage energy storage system.

The special Manchester City unit utilizes “second life” batteries that have already been used in Nissan’s electric vehicles, but still have enough capacity for domestic use.

“An electric vehicle needs to have a battery replacement about half way through its life, due to the charge discharge cycle. Which means there’s a battery that’s useful, but not for vehicle application. It’s perfect for home storage application,” said Eaton’s Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) president, Frank Campbell.

Eaton are one of the first companies in the UK to reuse second life batteries in such a way, which seeks to make home energy storage more affordable.

By partnering with Manchester City Football Club, Eaton hope to take advantage of their wide fan base and marketing channels to promote the product.

Eaton’s EMEA vice president, Cyrille Brisson, said they are “proud” to work with Manchester City, as it is “a club that also supports our vision of a greener tomorrow”

In turn, the Premier League team will use the partnership to promote their own commitment to sustainability.

“Our job is to help bring it to life, help tell the story and help to reach a big audience,” said Manchester City’s group commercial officer and managing director of City Football Marketing.

“Eaton shares City’s values of operating in a way that promotes a positive impact on our community and environment. We are looking forward to working with Eaton and tapping into their heritage and expertise to further grow our knowledge in this field,” said Damian Willoughby, of City Football Group.

The special edition unit is part of a campaign between the groups that looks to illustrate how power management and sustainable energy can have positive benefits for the environment.
