ECCC member Dan Byles to leave parliament

The North Warwickshire and Bedworth MP, who won the Tories’ most marginal seat by a 54 vote margin in 2010, said “it is now time to move on to new challenges”.

The MP is a supporter of shale gas exploration and development and has called on the government to “implement the right regime” for fracking in the UK.

Prior to his election victory, Byles had served in the army for nine years, including tours of duty in Bosinia and Kosova.

In a statement, he said: “By the time of the 2015 General Election, serving my country will have been the primary focus of my professional life for some 14 years.”

He added: “As I hoped it would be, my time in Parliament has been hard work but uniquely rewarding.

“I am proud of what we have achieved as a government – putting Britain back on the road to recovery following the worst economic collapse the country has ever faced.”

Byles, who won his seat with an 8.1 per cent swing from Labour in 2010, and defeated the former energy minister Mike O’Brien.

He becomes the 23rd Conservative MP this parliament to announce they will step aside in 2015 – a list that also includes former climate change minister Greg Barker and Laura Sandys.
