EDF and Centrica take on failed suppliers’ customers

EDF will take on the 360,000 domestic customers and handful of business accounts of failed supplier Green Network Energy, Ofgem has confirmed.

Meanwhile, Centrica’s recently formed British Gas Evolve brand will absorb the 50,000 consumers supplied by Simplicity, which also exited the market last week.

In its announcement the energy regulator reassured affected customers that outstanding credit balances would be honoured.

EDF said it would also pay the outstanding £140 Warm Home Discount rebates to Green Network’s 12,000 eligible customers and make an additional contribution towards the costs of wider environmental and social obligations.

Philippa Pickford, Ofgem’s director of retail, said: “I am pleased to announce we have appointed EDF for the customers of Green Network Energy, and British Gas Evolve for customers of Simplicity Energy. Their energy supply will continue as normal, and domestic customer credit balances will be honoured.

“Both new suppliers will be in contact with customers over the coming days with further information. Once the transfer has been completed, customers can shop around for a better deal if they wish to.”

Green Network and Simplicity are the first two suppliers to exit the market in 2021.

Despite the pandemic, only four suppliers entered the SoLR process last year. They were Gnergy, Effortless Energy, Tonik and Yorkshire Energy.

Council-backed suppliers Robin Hood and Bristol Energy both ceased trading and their customers sold to other retailers.

Industry experts have previously spoken to Utility Week and predicted that some suppliers may be facing a “winter of discontent” due to the pandemic.
