The company is proposing to convert 67 hectares of arable land into a wildlife habitat by changing conditions to create reedbed and lowland ditch habitat to replace those present on the Sizewell Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest that would be built on if plans for Sizewell C go ahead.
EDF Energy said it is progressing these plans separately and in advance of Sizewell C so that the habitat can be established before the potential land-take occurs. It also said the habitat would be created and managed even if the new nuclear power station is not granted consent.
Stage one public consultation on initial proposals and options for Sizewell C ended in February 2013 and a further stage of consultation is intended to take place in 2015.
EDF Energy said the habitat, if created, would benefit a variety of wildlife including birds and rare plants. It said it will bring proposals to open up certain areas for public recreation as long as this does not hinder biodiversity in due course.
