EDF Energy wins two public sector contracts

EDF Energy will supply electricity to public sector bodies in Scotland and the North East of England after being awarded two electricity supply contracts.

The contracts with Scottish Procurement and NEPO (North East Procurement Organisation) will help lower energy costs and carbon emissions for public sector customers, EDF Energy said.

In Scotland, EDF Energy will supply electricity to almost all public sector bodies after being awarded Scotland’s largest electricity supply contract by annual volume for the second time. EDF Energy will supply 2.6TWh of electricity to 28,000 public sector sites, including hospitals, schools and universities. The volume of electricity accounts for around 10 per cent of Scotland’s annual electricity consumption.

As part of this new contract, Scottish public sector sites can choose to receive 100 per cent renewable electricity, supporting the Scottish Energy Strategy ambition that half of Scotland’s heat, transport and electricity needs are from renewable sources by 2030.

In the North East, EDF Energy will supply 2TWh over a four-year contract to local authorities, as well as the wider public sector via NEPO’s associate membership scheme. EDF Energy said it will also deliver initiatives designed to support social value, including supporting both local skills and employment, and healthier, safer and more resilient communities.

The contracts will see EDF Energy provide expertise to “optimise consumption” and encourage uptake and understanding of demand side services.

It hopes to support public sector organisations to change their energy use to help keep the grid in balance.

Beatrice Bigois, managing director for customers at EDF Energy, said: “We’re proud to have been selected by the Scottish government and NEPO to serve their customers in Scotland and the North East of England.

“Through these contracts they will benefit from a range of solutions to reduce their carbon emissions, be more energy efficient and ultimately reduce their costs. We really look forward to supporting them achieve their sustainability ambitions.”

Marie Perriam, regional category specialist at NEPO, added: “NEPO look forward to working with EDF Energy and using our joint expertise and knowledge to benefit NEPO’s members and deliver wider benefits to the North East.

“In addition to securing immediate financial savings, the NEPO electricity supply and demand framework agreement will provide access to innovative electricity supply side and demand side models, helping reduce electricity consumption, support sustainability and further reduce costs.”

The Scottish procurement was won following a competitive tender process run by the Scottish government. The contract to supply electricity will start on 1 April 2019.

NEPO has appointed EDF Energy as the sole supplier of its new electricity framework agreement. The contract will also commence in April next year.
