Speaking yesterday in a debate on job insecurity, Andrew Percy, the Conservative MP for Brigg and Goole, said that if Eggborough closed, the replacement generation and associated jobs “will probably be offshore wind and most of those units will come from overseas”.
Eggborough faces closure and the loss of up to 850 jobs at the site, and thousands more in the supply chain, after £750 million plans for a biomass conversion at the coal fired power station were axed after a shock decision by government to ration early approval for subsidies.
His fellow Tory MP, Nigel Adams, said “there is no sense in creating jobs overseas for technologies that do not produce electricity”.
Adams went on to say that the jobs associated with Eggborough and the biomass conversion is “right on our doorstep”.
He added: “Converting the station to biomass means 800 new on-site jobs and delivers growth across the region.”
Both MPs are campaigning for the conversion plans to go ahead and for the power station to remain open.
