Electricity switching hits 1.5 million for 2015

The latest electricity switching data shows that 251,318 households chose a new supplier in May which is a decrease of around 25 per cent on the switching rate in April.

While Energy UK says this remains consistent with the rates seen in May in both 2014 and 2013, it is a fall of around 60 per cent from the rate seen in March this year.

The switching rate hit 417,394 in March, the highest switching peak since November 2013, which coincided with a governmental ‘Power to Switch’ campaign. The national, regional and online advertising campaign was launched in February for four weeks and informed people they could save an average of £200 by switching.

Independent suppliers gained a 26 per cent share of switches by gaining 65,052 electricity accounts in May, which is a consistent percentage since the start of the year.

Energy UK’s chief executive Lawrence Slade said: “There are now even more suppliers for customers to choose from. It is great to see thousands of households continuing to take advantage of this by switching electricity provider each month.”

“Many customers will be coming off their fixed energy deals over the coming weeks so now is a good time tolook around to see what deals are on offer.”
