Energy Saving Trust announces £10m round 5 funding

A total of £10 million will be available in the fifth round of the Ofgem energy redress scheme, the Energy Saving Trust (EST) has revealed.

Applications for the EST-managed scheme, which collects voluntary payments from energy companies to distribute to charities, will reopen on Monday 19 August.

Funds raised will support individual vulnerable consumers, while a small percentage will be used to support innovation products and services that are designed to help existing or future consumers.

Three separate funds are available to ensure that projects of a similar nature and scale are assessed against each other.

For example, the main fund of £7.5 million is aimed at projects seeking grants between £50,000 and £2 million while the small grants fund of £1 million is aimed at projects seeking grants of between £20,000 and £49,000.

The innovation fund meanwhile contains £1.5 million and is aimed at projects seeking grants between £50,000 to £750,000 which support the development of innovative products or services to provide benefits to energy consumers.

Since launching last summer the scheme has funded 34 projects, awarding more than £3.1 million.

There are currently 392 eligible charities registered to apply to the scheme and the competition for this round of funding is expected to be strong, with a record number of applications anticipated.

Mike Thornton, group director of operations at Energy Saving Trust, said: “We are very pleased to be able to distribute a substantial pot of funds to provide benefits to energy consumers through this round of the Energy Redress Scheme.

“Supporting a diverse variety of charities in their work to reduce fuel poverty and improve energy efficiency is even more important at a time when energy issues are a key focus for everyone.”

The application process will remain open until Friday 18 October 2019.
