Andrew Jones, managing director of S&C Electric Europe, challenged Ofgem and told Utility Week a rollout of energy storage across the UK electricity distribution and transmission networks is unlikely “unless something changes in the licence categories” because “a distribution network is not allowed to have generation assets”.
He added: “Let storage be recognised that it is different and the market will take care of the rest.”
Nick Heyward, project director of smarter networks at UK Power Networks (UKPN), said he was also keen to see the classification of storage as generation changed.
UKPN and S&C are working on a large energy storage pilot scheme in Leighton Buzzard.
Ofgem, said it was also looking at “how proposed business models sit with the unbundling requirements of the European Union ‘Third Package’ legislation”.
