Energy Systems Catapult names new chief executive

New replaces interim chief executive Nick Smailes, who will stay on at the Catapult as business development director.

New said he was “looking forward to the challenge” of further developing and establishing the Catapult as a “recognised leader in energy systems”.

Smailes said: “I am proud to have steered the Energy Systems Catapult through set-up since September 2014. I’m delighted to be handing over to someone as experienced as Philip as the Catapult enters its next phase of growth and to remain involved to support the delivery of real innovation impact in this important sector.”

Innovate UK chief executive Ruth McKernan added that New will “drive the next stage of the Catapult” as it works to “seize the huge opportunities for UK businesses in global energy systems”.

The Energy Systems Catapult is one of a network of technology and innovation centres set up by Innovate UK.

It works with companies focused on exploiting the new product and services opportunities created by the need to transform global energy systems, helping accelerate technology-based solutions.

The catapult also engages with Government to address the market mechanisms and business models that will be required to enable such solutions.
