Eon launches ‘smart saver’ tariff

Eon has launched a “no frills” fixed one-year “smart saver” tariff, which will be available to customers by telephone and priced at £1,038 based on the national average dual fuel consumption.

The company said the tariff offers customers the “reassurance” their prices will not rise for a period of 12 months and will also offer an optional smart meter.

Customers who sign up for the tariff must agree to receive communication about having a smart meter device fitted.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has set a target for energy companies to offer a smart meter to every home by 2020.

Gillian Baker, director of smart metering at Eon, said: “Eon Smart Saver provides peace of mind to customers that their prices are capped for the duration of the 12-month tariff while also offering customers the opportunity to install one of our smart meters which gives them a number of significant benefits.”

She added: “Smart meters bring an end to estimated bills and give customers greater understanding of their energy use, providing them with the information they need to take control of how and where they use energy, helping them to lower their energy use and the amount they spend.”

EDF launched a similar tariff also called “smart saver” in October last year that allows customers access to lower fixed prices if they have a smart meter or commit to having one installed within three months of signing up.

The £1,038 price for Eon’s “smart saver” tariff is based on Ofgem’s annual consumption of 12,000 kWh for gas and 3,100 kWh for unrestricted electricity across all regions, for customers paying by fixed monthly direct debit, the company said.

More than eight million smart meters have been installed across the UK to date, and a further 400,000 are being installed each month, energy and clean growth minister Claire Perry told Parliament earlier this month.

British Gas has installed the most smart meters of all the suppliers to date (4.5 million). It claims it is installing a smart meter every 25 seconds.
