Eon’s Rampion offshore wind farm gets government go-ahead

The offshore windfarm is planned off the Sussex coast and is expected to support over 750 jobs and bring over £2 billion of investment into the UK’s economy, according to a government statement.

“We’re driving investment in our energy security, and our plans have made us number one in the world for investment in offshore wind energy,” said energy secretary Ed Davey.

“This project is great news for Sussex, providing green jobs as well as driving business opportunities right across the country in a sector with a clear roadmap for long-term growth,” Davey added.

For the project to go ahead the developers will still need to make a final investment decision (FID) and apply for government funding support through either the Renewables Obligation regime, or the new Contracts for Diffference scheme.

Should the developers come to a positive FID construction will begin in 2015, with a target start date in 2018/19.
