First power generated at Rampion offshore windfarm

Rampion offshore windfarm has begun generating power, Eon has announced.

The project, located 13 kilometres off the coast of Sussex, features 116 turbines with combined capacity of 400MW.

“We’re especially proud to have reached this milestone as the first power is generated at Rampion,” said project director Matthew Swanwick.

“Over the coming weeks and months, the turbines will one-by-one begin to be turned on and generate power as they are brought online.”

Work to prepare the seabed for turbine foundations began in autumn 2016. The first was installed in early 2016 and the last by the following November.

Turbine installation kicked off in March of this year and was finished ahead of schedule in September. The project is due to be completed in 2018.

The windfarm is being built by Eon, the Green Investment Group and Canadian energy infrastructure firm Enbridge.
