The chairman of Spanish energy giant Iberdrola this week called for the establishment of a single European energy regulator to accelerate greater cross-border links and the creation of a single European market.
Speaking in London, Ignacio Galan said a single European energy market would require increased interconnections between countries, harmonised tax policies and liberalised tariffs. “To achieve all this, the European Union should also work towards the creation of a single regulator,” he said.
Datamonitor analyst Yasmin Valji said: “A single regulator is the most expedient way to accelerate harmonisation.”
A spokesman for the Energy Networks Association said the association “had no view either way on a single European regulator”.
