The distributor has worked with NGS on metering contracts for a decade but this represents the first time it will install electricity meters. The contract was awarded following a tendering process.
The company said its engineers have undergone “train to gain” accreditation to complete the installations, and each engineer will recieve mentoring until each is deemed competent. The company has also expanded its team by an additional ten engineers to meet demand.
WWU began the installation work in December last year, and has just installed the 200th meter in its programme.
WWU’s head of emergency and metering services said: “We are delighted to be able to build on our strong track record of delivery of National Grid metering contracts. In the last ten years we have built a strong relationship with them and are pleased to support them in their smart meter roll out requirements.
“We are confident that working together we can support National Grid Smart’s ambitions in this phase of the smart meter rollout.”
Smart meters will allow consumers will be able to monitor their energy use and potentially make savings by connecting to new ‘time-of-use’ tariffs. It also signals the end of estimated billing.
UK energy suppliers must install smart meters in 30 million UK homes and small businesses by 2020.
