Good Energy has revealed plans to launch what it claimed will be the UK’s first energy tariff designed specifically with heat pumps in mind.
Both up front installation costs and the electricity used to run heat pumps have been historic barriers for homeowners looking to use them. Good Energy said its new tariff will offer cheaper unit rates at certain periods during the day when electricity from the grid is greener or more plentiful.
The Wiltshire-based renewable energy supplier believes the new offering will complement the government’s new £2 billion Green Home Grants announced by the chancellor last month.
Under the scheme people can claim up to £10,000 towards green home improvements, including the installation of heat pumps, from this coming September.
Juliet Davenport, founder and chief executive of Good Energy, said: “The vast majority of UK homes are kept warm with fossil fuels in the form of gas. It’s a huge thing to tackle if we are to decarbonise the UK. So, the green home grants scheme is a good move by the chancellor and Good Energy is helping it go further with this innovative tariff.
“This tariff will be designed to make it as easy and affordable as possible for people to get rid of dirty gas heating their home and start using clean electricity from renewables.”
Good Energy’s new tariff will be available from the autumn.
Recently Centrica published a three-point plan which includes a series of measures it believes will help restart the post-Covid economy in line with its net-zero emissions commitment.
As part of its proposals, the British Gas-owner called for the installation of one million heat pumps over the next five years as part of the green economic recovery.
