The plant is expected to begin commercial operations in 2016/17 which will help to replace the 18GW of generation capacity slated to close by 2020.
Previously CGen have said the plant will play an important role in meeting demand needs with cleaner power generation because it will be designed to incorporate carbon capture and storage (CCS) and combined heat and power (CHP) capabilities.
“The power plant will contribute to the UK’s carbon emission reduction targets because, when equipped with CCS facilities, it will emit at least 80 per cent less carbon dioxide than existing coal fired plant,” CGen have said.
“In addition to electricity generation, the plant will have the capacity for providing steam and hot water to local industry and residents,” it added.
A spokesman for the company said CGen would consider the government’s approval letter before giving further comment.
