Government approves RWE’s 96MW wind farm plans

The £100 million Clocaenog Forest project is the fifth Welsh wind power development from RWE’s renewable energy arm to be approved by the UK government since January 2013.

The latest approval brings RWE Innogy’s total consented onshore wind capacity in Wales since the beginning of last year to 281MW, the company said.

A spokesman for the company told Utility Week that construction is expected to start in 2016, with an operational start date expected 18 months later.

Prior to construction the company will be undertaking further detailed site investigation work, the spokesman added.

Project manager Martin Cole said in a statement: “We have already started to make inroads into working with the business sector through our supply chain events, to ensure local companies are well placed to bid for contracts when they emerge.”

“We are also keen to step up our work with communities to maximise the significant community benefit fund of £768,000 a year. With our neighbouring sister project Gwynt y Môr, that means RWE Innogy UK will be putting an extra £1.5million a year into North Wales communities,” he added.

The development of the project still subject to a successful a grid connection application, which is due to be made later this year, the spokesman added.
