Great British Bake Off final causes 400MW demand surge

The increase in demand in the 5 minutes after the show finished at 9pm was equivalent to 6.4 million cupcakes being baked.

The series finale pulled in 9 million viewers and the pick up in energy demand was the biggest following a BBC2 programme since a Top Gear episode in 2008.

A spokeswoman for National Gird said the surge in demand had been expected due to the popularity of the show.
