Greencoat UK Wind has placed an order with Vestas for the 13 turbines that will make up the 47MW Douglas West onshore windfarm in Scotland.
Douglas West will be one of the first windfarms in the UK to be built without any subsidies and the first to feature the V136 turbine model.
The president of Vestas’ operations in northern and central Europe, Nils de Baar, said: “This project shows that when we are able to install our newest technology, we are able to deliver a profitable wind park under merchant market conditions, offering the absolute lowest cost of energy to the British energy consumers.”
The turbines will each have maximum power output of 3.6MW. The first deliveries are due in the first quarter of 2021.
Greencoat UK Wind agreed to buy the project from Blue Energy in December for £45 million including construction costs. Commissioning of the windfarm is scheduled for the third quarter of 2021.
Meanwhile, MHI Vestas has confirmed an order from Cobra Wind International for five 9.5MW versions of its V164 turbine for the Kincardine floating offshore windfarm in Scotland.
They are scheduled to be installed in spring 2020, joining a single 2MW V60 turbine that has already been deployed at the site near Aberdeen Bay.
MHI Vestas is a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Vestas. Its chief executive Philippe Kavafyan said: “Bringing our technology and experience to Kincardine in Scotland advances our leadership in floating offshore wind and confirms our long-term commitment to commercial scale, floating offshore wind projects in the future.”
The V164 turbine – currently the most powerful in the world – has also been deployed at Vattenfall’s European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre in Aberdeen Bay. In September MHI Vestas broke “the double-digit barrier” by launching a 10MW version of the turbine.
GE Renewable Energy is developing an even more powerful 12MW turbine called Haliade-X. The design is due to be trialled at the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult’s power train test centre in Blyth.
