Greenpeace activists target Laidlaw in Centrica HQ sting

Greenpeace is protesting because it believes Centrica is pushing for gas to remain a key part of the UK’s energy mix, when the group favours more renewables. Greenpeace believes that Centrica’s actions come despite its acknowledgement that rising gas prices are pushing up the cost of energy bills.

The protestors aim to find Laidlaw’s office, then wallpaper it with giant energy bills. It is not known whether they have yet achieved that objective.

Greenpeace campaigner Lawrence Carter said: “If Centrica instead invested in clean, cutting-edge renewable energy and energy efficiency, they would help to both bring household bills under control and to tackle climate change.”

In response a Centrica spokesman said the firm recognised the impact higher energy bills were having on household budgets.

“In the past three years, we have spent more than £500m on helping vulnerable customers, more than any other organisation in Britain bar the Government,” said the spokesman.

He added: “In terms of our environmental commitment, we have one of the lowest carbon intensities of the major power generators in the UK and have invested more than £3 billion in the last three years in lower carbon generation and are a major investor in offshore wind.”
